Spring Cleaning Smoothie

Spring always gets me energized to spring clean the house and get organized. The change in seasons also makes me start thinking about cleaning up my diet. Our bodies have their own built-in detoxifying organs—the liver, especially. But our eating habits always get the best of us.

There are all sorts of things to eat and drink that can leave us feeling a bit sluggish and in need of a recharge, especially over the holiday season. I decided to start drinking a green smoothie for breakfast every morning because it’s a great way to give my body a vitamin wake-up call for the day. Here’s a detox version of my daily smoothie to give your system a healthy boost.

I’m not a big fan of super-sweet smoothies. The sweetness in this recipe comes from the frozen banana and the frozen pineapple. The greens provide a nice detoxifying kick to get you energized for the day ahead.

The type of greens you use is up to you. There are so many different kinds out there: spinach, kale, baby bok choy, and Swiss chard are just a few options. I use baby bok choy and spinach interchangeably in most recipes and love how the lemon juice really brightens them up!

Recipe:

2 cups spinach or bok choy

1 cup water

Juice from ½ lemon

1 frozen banana

1 cup frozen pineapple

1 tsp spirulina (optional)

Blend until creamy and serve immediately!

There are many great ways to make green smoothies fun and appealing to your taste buds! Try them out to find what you like best.
